THE FAMOUS ARABICA LINTONG COFFEE
Greenbean Arabica Lintong: A Treasure from North Sumatra

Nestled in the highlands of North Sumatra, Indonesia, Lintong Nihuta is renowned for producing some of the world’s finest Arabica coffee beans. The region’s unique combination of fertile volcanic soil, high altitude, and traditional processing methods contributes to the distinctive characteristics of Lintong coffee.
The History of Lintong Coffee in Indonesia
Lintong Nihuta’s coffee history dates back to the 19th century when the Dutch colonial government introduced Arabica coffee cultivation in Sumatra. In 1750, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) brought Arabica coffee beans to the region, and by the 1800s, local farmers in Lintong Nihuta had started cultivating coffee. In 1888, coffee cultivation expanded around the Toba Highlands, including Lintong Nihuta. The area’s high altitude (1,000–1,500 meters above sea level) and volcanic soil provided the ideal environment for producing high-quality Arabica beans. Over time, Lintong coffee became one of Indonesia’s most sought-after coffee varieties, particularly in international markets.
Development of Lintong Coffee Over the Years
Since its introduction, Lintong coffee has undergone significant development. In 1988, a superior local variety called Sigarar Utang was discovered in Batu Gajah, Paranginan Utara, Lintong Nihuta. This variety became a top choice among farmers due to its high yield and exceptional quality. In 2009, the Lintong Organic Coffee Farmers Association (APKLO) received fair trade premium funds of IDR 218 million from 152 farmer members. The funds were used for farmer training, scholarships, and production infrastructure improvements, further strengthening the region’s coffee industry. By 2018, the coffee plantation area in Lintong Nihuta covered approximately 2,979 hectares, producing around 1,979 tons of coffee annually. In 2019, despite a slight decrease in cultivated land to 2,978 hectares, production increased to 1,982 tons, demonstrating the efficiency and sustainability of Lintong coffee farming.
What Makes Lintong Coffee Special?
- Unique Flavor Profile: Lintong coffee is celebrated for its complex flavor notes, which include earthy, nutty, and spicy undertones with a hint of dark chocolate. These flavors develop due to the region’s volcanic soil and traditional processing techniques.
- Optimal Growing Conditions: The high-altitude environment (1,300–1,600 meters above sea level) and cool temperatures (13°C–28°C) contribute to the slow maturation of coffee cherries, enhancing their flavor complexity.
- Traditional Wet-Hulling Process: Local farmers use the unique “Giling Basah” (wet-hulling) method, which enhances the coffee’s body and creates the signature earthy and bold profile that distinguishes Sumatran coffees.
Lintong Coffee on the Global Stage
The exceptional quality of Lintong coffee has attracted coffee enthusiasts worldwide. Since the 1980s, it has been exported to major markets such as the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. In recent years, China, Australia, and Switzerland have also developed an increasing demand for Lintong beans. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest Arabica coffee exporters, with Lintong coffee playing a crucial role in this success. The coffee’s strong presence in specialty markets has made it a preferred choice for roasters and cafes worldwide.

Many coffee farms in Lintong Nihuta have adopted sustainable farming practices, earning certifications such as Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade. These initiatives ensure environmentally friendly cultivation and support the well-being of local farmers.
